Sir Edmund P Hillary, KG, ONZ, KBE (1919 – 2008). New Zealand mountaineer, explorer and philanthropist. On 29 May 1953, Hillary, and Nepalese Sherpa mountaineer, Tenzing Norgay, became the first climbers confirmed as having reached the summit of Mount Everest. In 1958 his party became the first to reach the South Pole using motorized vehicles as part of the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition. A 1993 Postal Cover commemorating the 40 Year anniversary of his ascent of Everest he has authentically signed.
